The Maps › Seeing with other eyes

Seeing with other eyes.

A Map for parents. A document written about your child, so you can read them with more time than daily life usually gives.

Written in English

I write your Map in English, and the interpretation session is held in English too.

What it is

A document written about your child, from what you tell me and from several readings crossed together. It is there so you can follow them with more clarity while they are still growing. It makes no diagnoses and puts no labels on them.

What looks like a fault is usually just how someone is made. This Map starts there.

Who this is for

  • Parents who want to understand a child of theirs in more detail than daily life allows.
  • Anyone with a child they feel they do not fully understand, and who wants to understand before correcting.
  • Anyone who simply wants to know more about their child.
  • Parents of children with difficulties around sleep, food, or getting on with others.
  • From 0 to 17 years old, with the reading adjusted to the actual age.
  • From 13 upwards, only if the young person agrees. I do not write about a teenager behind their back.
  • For friends, aunts, uncles and grandparents who want to give it to the parents.

When it is better to wait, or to look elsewhere

  • If there is any suspicion of abuse or ill-treatment, this is not the way. There are proper authorities for that, and I can point you to them.
  • If there are court proceedings about custody or parental responsibility, or if the parents disagree, I do not go ahead.
  • If the child does not live with you most of the time, I would rather we talked first.
  • If something is suspected and there is no professional support in place yet, I would rather we waited.
  • If the child has a diagnosis, get in touch with me first, so we can see whether the Map makes sense at all.
  • If someone close died in the past year, or if a separation is happening, I would rather wait a few months.
  • If one of you, the parents, is going through a hard time, that matters, and I think we should talk first.

This is not a developmental assessment, a psychological assessment, or a child psychiatry appointment. No diagnoses are made, no labels are put on anyone, and this does not replace paediatric or clinical care. If there is a persistent worry about your child, that is the path to take, and this document does not stand in for it.

If you are in crisis or at risk, do not wait for me: in Portugal, call SNS 24, 808 24 24 24, or 112.

If you are unsure, write to me first and we will see whether this is the moment. I would rather you waited than bought at the wrong moment. Write to marta@serpaciente.pt.

What looks like stubbornness in them is usually the only way they found of not disappearing.

this is how a Reminder Map sounds

The reading adjusts to their age.

The Map is the same; the way of looking changes with the stage your child is at.

0 to 4 years

Baby

To understand how your child is made before they have words for it.

5 to 12 years

Child

To read your child at a time when everything changes quickly.

13 to 17 years

Teenager

To keep contact at an age when children close up.

What is included

  • · PDF document written for the parents.
  • · Reminder Map, one A4 page with the essentials.
  • · Interpretation session of 45 minutes to an hour (in the € 250 option), booked once the Map is ready, so I can read it with you before sending it over. If there are two children, it is one 90 minutes session for both.

The Map arrives digitally. If you would like it printed, I will send you a quote. Delivery is within a month; if you are in a hurry, write to me first. With teenagers, the Map only goes ahead with their consent.

People who have been here

Thank you, from the heart, for my map. There were parts that moved me. Things I read and actually stopped to think about, and realised they are true.
